Abstracts:
Neutrinos are supposed to be massless in the Standard Model of particle physics for decades. However, several experiments have recently provided compelling evidences for a new phenomenon, neutrino oscillation, that implies the three types of neutrinos are mixed and possess mass. One approach to explore neutrino oscillation is to utilize a running nuclear reactor which is a copious source of low-energy electron antineutrinos. In this colloquium, some of recent and future reactor-based experiments designed for studying neutrino oscillation will be presented.
About the Hung Hing Ying Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Science and Technology
The Hung Hing Ying Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Science and Technology was established with a generous donation from the Hung Hing Ying & Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation. The Hung Hing Ying Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Science and Technology aims to attract top academics in the fields of science and technology to spend time at HKU over a span of two to three years to interact with our teachers and students.
Coffee and tea will be served 20 minutes prior to the seminar.
