Probing Neutrino Mass with β and β β Decays

Speaker Dr. A.W.P. Poon
Affiliation Lawrence Berkeley National Lab., USA
Date October 13, 2010 (Wed)
Time 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Venue Room 522, 5/F, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building, HKU

Abstract:

Despite several decades of intense experimental investigations, several fundamental properties of the neutrinos are still unknown. Atmospheric, solar, reactor and accelerator neutrino experiments have conclusively demonstrated that neutrinos are not massless, yet the laboratory determination of their mass remains elusive. Future beta-decay and neutrinoless double beta-decay experiments can help closing this knowledge gap. In this talk, I will describe KATRIN, a tritium beta-decay experiment, and MAJORANA, a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment, and how they will contribute to this worldwide quest for the neutrino mass.

Coffee and tea will be served 20 minutes prior to the seminar
