Nanotechnology: From Quantum Computers to Battling Hospital Superbugs

Abstract:

We define nanotechnology and its relation to traditional disciplines as a toolkit to solve problems from areas ranging from healthcare to information technology. Specific examples to be discussed include experiments underpinning future silicon-based quantum devices and nanomechanical screening of candidate antibiotics targeted against bacteria resistant to conventional treatments.

About the Speaker:

Gabriel Aeppli is the Quain Professor of Physics and the Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology. He is a Fellow of Royal Society UK, and a co-recipient of American Physical Society’s Oliver Buckley Prize in 2005.  He received his Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and became a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories and a Senior Research Scientist for NEC (Princeton) before he took the post in  London.
