Abstract
Feibelman surface-response functions provide a mesoscopic correction to classical interface electrodynamics. This work examines the consequences of quantum surface-response effects in one-dimensional layered photonic structures across different wavelength regimes. In the effective-medium regime, I derive corrections to the homogenized permittivity in terms of the perpendicular and parallel components of the Feibelman (d)-parameters. More generally, I develop a transfer-matrix method that incorporates these quantum surface corrections without effective-medium approximation, allowing the analysis to extend from the metamaterial regime to the photonic-crystal regime and to larger unit-cell-to-wavelength ratios. Possible experimental implementations and measurement strategies will also be discussed. At the end of the talk, I will briefly introduce my theoretical progress of electron-photon interaction with simultaneous presence of optical nonlinearity and pondermotive interactions.
