Research Seminar: Gamma-ray Bursts with Unusual Origins

Speaker Prof. Binbin ZHANG
Affiliation Nanjing University
Date June 13, 2023 (Tuesday)
Time 4:30 p.m.
Venue Room 522, 5/F, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building, The University of Hong Kong

Abstract

In this presentation, I will delve into our recent research on Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) that deviate from standard classifications or progenitor models. These GRBs encompass a unique event originating from a magnetar giant flare, a distinct short-duration GRB not arising from compact star merger, and a genuinely long-duration GRB resulting from compact binary star merger. The discovery of these exceptional phenomena indicates that our current comprehension of GRBs is incomplete, warranting further investigation into these extraordinary events to gain a comprehensive understanding of the diverse mechanisms behind GRBs.

Biography

Professor Binbin Zhang earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2011. Following three postdoctoral positions at Penn State, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalucia in Spain, he joined Nanjing University in early 2018. Prof. Zhang's primary research interests revolve around high-energy astrophysics and data-driven investigations of Gamma-ray Bursts. Over the past decade, he has published over 150 papers in astrophysical journals, including several in high-profile journals such as Nature and Science.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
