Abstract

The laws of physics provide information-theoretic security in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) during communication between different parties. Since Bennett and Brassard introduced the first QKD scheme in 1984, QKD has seen much theoretical development and experimental demonstrations. Practical implementation, however, opens up security loopholes due to the imperfections of available devices. Considerable efforts have been dedicated to address various side channels resulting from these imperfect devices. The Measurement-Device-Independent (MDI)-QKD, introduced in 2013, successfully eliminates all side channels on the detection side. On the other hand, a fully passive QKD protocol was proposed in 2022 to remove all side channels concerning source modulation. Hence, it seems logical to combine these two concepts into a passive MDI-QKD system, thus eradicating side channels from both detectors and source modulators sides. The aim of this project is to propose a fully passive MDI-QKD setup and study its performance using numerical simulations (with programming tools such as C++ and MATLAB).
