Abstract

The importance of spin-orbit coupling has been well-known in the fields of atomic and solid state physics. With advanced techniques in controlling ultracold atomic gases, it is now possible to create and manipulate spin-orbit coupling in highly controllable ways. In the first part, I will derive the set of hydrodynamic equations for a spin-orbit coupled Bose gas in its normal state in which the spin and density degrees of freedom are coupled together. Several interesting consequences are discussed, including the occurrence of persistent spin helix, the decay of spin helical structure and the relation between response function and current relaxation rate. In the second part, I will discuss the Beliaev decay in spin-orbit coupled Bose condensate. Preliminary calculation shows that at the critical point the decay rate is suppressed due to the softened phonon spectrum.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
