X-ray View of Cosmic Supermassive Black Hole Growth

Speaker Prof. Bin Luo
Affiliation School of Astronomy and Space Science, Nanjing University
Date October 4, 2018 (Thursday)
Time 2:30 p.m.
Venue Room 518, 5/F, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building, HKU

Abstract

I will review the utility of X-ray surveys for studying the growth of supermassive black hole (SMBHs) in the distant universe. Deep X-ray surveys are the most effective method of identifying reliable and quite complete samples of distant active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the main sites of SMBH growth. Deep X-ray surveys along with multiwavelength supporting data have enabled studies on the demographics, physics, and ecology of AGNs. I will focus on the example of the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South Survey (CDF-S), the deepest X-ray survey performed to date; the data and some selected recent science results are to be presented. I will introduce our ongoing 12 deg^2 X-SERVS survey for AGN environment studies. I will also discuss prospects on future X-ray missions including some of our current efforts.

Coffee and tea will be served 20 minutes prior to the seminar.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
