Nuclear Physics: structure of matter, evolution of universe and origin of element

Speaker Prof. Jie MENG
Affiliation Peking University
Date October 28, 2015 (Wednesday)
Time 4:30 p.m.
Venue Room 522, 5/F, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building

Abstract

In this seminar, nuclear physics and its understanding for the structure of matter, evolution of universe and origin of element will be introduced for non-expert in the field. Topics and questions including the goal of nuclear physics, specialty of atomic nucleus, impact of nuclear physics on society and daily life, why gold is expensive, the facility for matter structure, will be discussed and answered. Stories of some physicists and personal view on education in nuclear physics will be introduced as well.

Introduction of Speaker:
After receiving his Ph.D. degree at Peking University in 1991, Jie MENG continued his scientific research for the years 1991-1993 at Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1993-1994 at Research Center Rossendorf, 1994-1996 at Technical University Munich, 1996-1998 at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN). He became a full Professor of Physics at Peking University in 1997. He was bestowed as the first Cheung Kong Professor (長江特聘教授) in Particle and Nuclear Physics by Ministry of Education in 2000 and held visiting or research positions at RIKEN, Technical University Munich, Tohoku University, Osaka University, Stellenbosch University, University of Edinburgh, Beihang University and Kyoto University, etc. He has made significant contributions to nuclear physics as demonstrated by the impressive publication list, including 10 papers in Physical Review Letters, 20 papers in Physics Letters B, and more than 300 papers in refereed journals with more than 7000 citations. His H-factor is 43. He is a fellows of the American Physical Society and received awards including the WU You-xun Prize (吳有訓物理獎) by the Chinese Physics Society, Khwarizmi International Award by the Iranian President, Achievement in Asia Award (華人物理學會亞洲成就獎) by the Overseas Chinese Physics Association, GENCO Membership Award by GSI (Germany) Exotic Nuclei Community, and two times the first rank awards for Science by Chinese Ministry of Education (中國高校自然科學一等獎).
