Abstract
After an experimental search spanning decades, a Higgs boson was discovered at CERN in the summer of 2012 by the ATLAS and the CMS collaborations. The discovery was achieved through the combination of several search channels, in a successful collaboration among thousands of scientists. In this talk, I will describe briefly the experimental facilities involved, the main components of the discovery, and some of the techniques used to extract the Higgs signal in the four-lepton channel in ATLAS. A number of compelling physics projects for the early phase of the run II of the LHC are also discussed.
