Abstract:

The recent development of modern neutron and proton user facilities in China entails a scheme for university involvement as users for research and/or co-developers of instrumentation. The China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) of the China Institute of Atomic Energy in Beijing is on the verge of producing the first neutrons to commence the commission of a suite of neutron-scattering instruments. The Institute of High Energy Physics in Beijing is leading the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Project to begin construction in Dongguan in 2010, projecting its completion in 2017. Tsinghua University has approved the immediate construction of a medium-flux, proton-accelerator driven, compact pulsed neutron/proton source (CPHS) to be completed in 3 years. All three facilities encourage involvement from universities. In this talk I shall introduce the current status of these projects, their differing capabilities in research areas, and the challenges in the timely realization of these capabilities. Amid these challenges come with opportunities of university-facility cooperation. I shall discuss the possible modes of collaboration that aim towards maximizing synergy and avoiding redundancy whereby university teams may enrich their programs in education and research.
