Learning Scientific Animation in One Day


Date:Time Slot A: Tuesday, July 15, 2003.
Time Slot B: Thursday, July 17, 2003.
Each participant is allowed to choose 1 time slot only.
Time:10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
(Lunch hour: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.,
Tea refreshments will be served during the coffee breaks within the lecture time.)
Venue:Room 311, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building, The University of Hong Kong
Speaker:Dr. M.K. Yip
(Lecturer of the course "Animation in Science")
Medium of Instruction:Cantonese supplemented with English.
Fee:Free of charge.
Enrolment:Each time slot has a maximum quota of 25, totaling 50.
Each school has a maximum quota of 2.
Acceptance on a first-come-first-served basis.
Prerequisites:Preliminary knowledge in programming of any language is expected. However, knowledge in JAVA is not assumed.

Objective:

The aim of the workshop is to share with the secondary school physics teachers the essential tips of writing scientific animation.

Contents of the Workshop:

  1. An Introduction to Java 2
  2. Running Simple Applets in a Browser
  3. Event Handling with Mouse and Keys
  4. Simple Java Graphics2D
  5. The Concepts of Java Animation
  6. The Rotation of Graphics and Images
  7. Swing - A Useful Package to Create Frame and Button, etc.
  8. Typical Examples in Scientific Animation
  9. Hand-on Practice


Handouts will be distributed to participants during the workshop.
